Colin Gillett is a self taught artist, he won his first prize at six years old an ice cream and tickets to the theater. Colin continued winning prizes in all the schools he attended. Signing up in the Merchant Navy for a short time. The sea caught Colin’s heart with it’s beauty and power, he became most adept at capturing the movement and colours of the sea. Colin’s paintings have been sold in Canada, the United Sates, UK, New Zealand and Australia. Painting famous historical ships, pirates, seascapes, landscapes and plein air. Plus what caught his interest.

Plein air painting which means painting on location. When you are outside it’s important is to absorb the colour palette of nature. Mixing colours in day light will help you in the studio, in this photo I’m painting in the beautiful Okanagan. It does not matter which medium you work in, the expansion of colour knowledge combinations in mixing gives you more options to express your self in colour themes.

When I paint the ocean, shape colour, movement and mood reflect in the composition. Painting a seascape feeling the sea breeze, the sounds of the ocean rolling in, and the distinctive scent of the beach. It helps to enlighten your design and lets the brush flow on the canvas.

Colin’s artistic journey of creating works of art has been challenging and rewarding.
